Your Conversations

Yap is built around real, spontaneous conversations. Videos and messages you send are transmitted through and stored on our servers to deliver them to your recipients.

Your content is encrypted in transit and at rest on our servers. We do not watch your private videos, read your messages, or use your content to serve ads. We may only access content when required by law, or when something is reported by another user for violations of our guidelines — and only the specific reported content is reviewed.

When you delete a message or video, it is removed from our active servers. Residual copies may briefly persist in encrypted backups before being purged.

Information We Collect

Account Information: We collect your name, phone number, and other details needed to create and verify your account.

Contact Information: If you choose to share your contact list, we use it to help you find and connect with people you know on Yap. We do not store your full contact list on our servers — we use it only for matching and discard the rest.

Profile Information: Your display name and profile picture are visible to members of the chats you are part of.

Camera Access: Yap uses your device's camera to capture and send video in real time. All content is recorded live through the camera — there are no uploads from your gallery or files.

Device Data: We collect information about your device, such as hardware model, operating system, unique device identifiers, and IP address. This helps us deliver notifications, troubleshoot issues, and keep your account secure.

Usage Data: We automatically collect data about how you interact with Yap — features you use, how often, and general navigation patterns. This helps us understand what's working and what we need to improve.

Notifications: We use push notifications to alert you about new messages and activity. Notification content is kept minimal to protect your privacy on lock screens.

How We Use Your Information

Deliver the Service: We use your information to operate Yap — sending and receiving video and messages, maintaining your profile, connecting you with contacts, and delivering notifications.

Keep You Safe: We use device and account data to detect suspicious activity, prevent unauthorized access, and protect the community from abuse and spam.

Improve Yap: We analyse aggregated, anonymised usage data to improve the app, fix bugs, and build features based on how people actually use it.

Communicate With You: We may send you service-related messages — security alerts, account updates, product announcements, or changes to our policies.

Data Sharing and Disclosure

With Other Users: Videos and messages you send are visible to the people you send them to. Your name and profile picture are visible to members of your chats. Be thoughtful about what you share.

With Service Providers: We work with trusted third-party providers for hosting, analytics, and infrastructure. They are contractually bound to use your data only to provide services to Yap and are required to maintain confidentiality.

For Legal Reasons: We may disclose your information when required by law, court order, or government request, or when we believe disclosure is necessary to protect the rights, safety, or property of Yap, our users, or the public.

We do not sell your personal data.

Data Retention

We keep your data for as long as your account is active and as needed to provide our services. If you delete your account, we will delete or anonymise your personal data within 90 days, except where we are legally required to retain it. Content you sent to other users may remain visible in their conversations even after you delete your account. However, your profile information and account data will be removed.

Your Rights and Choices

Access and Correction: You can view and update your personal information in the app at any time.

Account Deletion: You can request deletion of your account and personal data through the app settings or by contacting us. We will process your request in accordance with applicable law.

Permissions: You control app permissions — camera, microphone, contacts, notifications — through your device settings. You can revoke any permission at any time.

Data Portability: You have the right to request a copy of your personal data in a portable format.

Data Security

We implement technical and organisational measures to protect your data, including encryption of content both in transit and at rest on our servers, secure authentication, and access controls. Security is an active and ongoing priority on our roadmap — we are continuously working to strengthen our protections and adopt best practices as they evolve. However, no system is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security. You are responsible for keeping your account credentials safe.

Analytics and Tracking

We use in-app analytics tools to understand usage patterns and improve the experience. This data is aggregated and not used to identify individual users. We do not use third-party advertising trackers.

Children's Privacy

Yap is not intended for children under 13 years of age. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children. If we learn that a child under 13 has created an account, we will delete it promptly. If you believe a child is using Yap, please contact us.
